This guide will help you to set up most Google Home devices (Nest Mini, Google Home, Chromecast, etc.) on the CSU network. It is important to know that not all devices are guaranteed to work using this method and you may still experience challenges even after following these steps.

Step 1: Find your phone’s MAC address

To setup the Google device, we will need two MAC addresses from you. The first is the MAC address of the phone that you will use to control the device in the Google Home app. It is also important to setup your phone to help make the process go much smoothly.

If you are using an Android:

  1. Go to the network settings page for both csu-visitor and csu-net.
  2. In the MAC address settings, select “Use Phone MAC”.
  3. After enabling this setting for both networks, find the MAC address under “Wi-Fi Address”.

If you are using an iPhone:

  1. Go to “Settings”, then “Wi-Fi”.
  2. For both csu-visitor and csu-net, click the IconDescription automatically generated icon.
  3. Turn off “Private Address”.
  4. After turning off this setting for both networks, find the MAC address under “Wi-Fi Address”.

You will need to send the MAC address you found along with the next MAC address to us.

Step 2: Find your Google device’s MAC address

If you have previously used your device:

  1. Open the Google Home app and tap on the device that you would like to set up.
  2. Tap the icon in the top right.
  3. Tap “Device information”, the MAC address should be listed here.
  4. Ensure that your device is up to date and update it accordingly.

If you are using a new device:

  1. Ensure that your phone is connected to csu-visitor.
  2. Tap the plus icon in the top left corner of the Google Home app (Shown in the photos below).
  3. Tap “Set up device” (Shown below).
  4. Tap “New devices”. The app will prompt you to choose a home to set up the device in and then confirm which device to set up.
  5. When you reach the “Connect to Wi-Fi” page, tap the three dots icon in the top right corner of the screen (Shown below).
  6. Tap “Show MAC Address” to reveal your device’s MAC address.

If you could not get to any of the steps above while following the process, there are a couple things you can try:

  • Factory reset your Google device.
  • Instead of connecting to csu-visitor, use a mobile hotspot using a secondary device and repeat the above steps.

Once you’ve found the MAC address, you can send it along with your eName and the MAC address you found in the previous step. We will make changes to our network and inform you when you should be ready to connect.

Step 3: Connect to your Google device

Once we get the backend configuration made, we will contact you to try the final setup.

Connect your phone to the CSU-Visitor network, and when setting up the google home, set it up on the same network. Odds are, it will throw one of two error messages.

  1. If the app gives an error saying that the google home was setup successfully but is not connected, close the app completely, connect your phone to CSU-Net, and reopen the app. The google home should appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap on it and it should allow you to complete setup
  2. If the app gives an error that “Something went wrong”, and says that it’s unknown weather the google home was setup successfully, DO NOT close the app. Instead, move over to network settings, connect your phone to CSU-Net, then go back to the app. Hit the retry button in the bottom right and setup should successfully complete.
