Though we try to support as many devices as possible within University Housing, there are a few that are unsupported on an Enterprise Network.

Unsupported devices:

  • Wireless printers: Outside of University Village 1500, 1600 and 1700, wireless printers are not permitted. Please visit this page for more details.
  • Streaming/casting devices that require management devices (e.g a phone or computer) to be on the same network as the device. These include, but aren't limited to Chromecasts, wireless bulbs, screen casting on Apple TV or equivalent devices, other devices that use another device as a remote.
Though these devices may connect at times, it is rare because the two partnered devices need to be connected to the same access point in order to work. Because there are access points in almost every room (your own, above, below or beside) it is easy for one device to connect to one access point and the other to connect to a different access point.
If your device does connect, there is a chance that everyone in the building can see and cast to your device since they are set up for home networks rather than enterprise networks.
We also do not support broadcasting on our network because this type of traffic is typically caused by spam.

  • Wireless routers- Outside of University Village 1700, personal wireless routers are not permitted. Please visit this page for more details.

Why will some of these devices work in University Village?
University Village is currently setup to have individual Apple Airport Express routers. They produce a unique network for each apartment so devices are able to be on the same network, whereas elsewhere, there are two broadcasted networks for everyone. These networks are csu-eid and csu-guest and more details on which to use can be found here.
